[Basic] Present Continuous (or Progressive)

USE:

Actions occurring at the moment of speaking.

e.g. I’m writing on this blog right now. (Isn’t it clear, right?)

Actions occurring near the moment of speaking.

e.g. Are you working much lately? (Not occurring JUST now, but near)

Fixed arrangements for the future.

e.g. I’m working tomorrow morning. (True story :()

FORM:

Affirmative: Subject + am/is/are + Verb with -ing (Gerund)

e.g. He is working at the moment.

I am listening to his new album.

* Watch out when adding -ing:

study – studying

go – going

come – coming (you delete the silent ‘e’)

lie – lying聽(change the ‘ie’ for ‘ying’)

stop – stopping聽(one-syllable word ending in consonant-vowel-consonant, we double the final consonant)

Negative: Subject + am/is/are + NOT + Verb with -ing

e.g. I am not studying now. (You can also say 芦I’m not…禄)

They are not paying attention to the teacher. (You can also say 芦aren’t禄)

Questions:

YES/NO: Am/is/are + Subject + Verb with -ing

e.g. Is she studying?

Are we meeting tomorrow?

INFORMATION (i.e. W-H): W-H + am/is/are + Subject + Verb with -ing

e.g. When are you going on vacation?

What are you doing now?

affirmative negative question
I I am playing. I am not playing. Am I playing?
he, she, it He is playing. He is not playing. Is he playing?
you, we, they You are playing. You are not playing. Are you playing?
